solace: discovering how our deepest needs are met by God

Life is hard, isn’t it? Who isn’t in need of some kind of soul solace? Although we don’t all look for it in the same or the right places. In my youth, I began badly at first, falling into blind alleyways leading to further degradation and destruction, coupled with a desperate need for love and acceptance.

What made the difference? It was only when I encountered God’s unconditional Love, and was saved by His grace, that I began to truly come alive on the inside. To breathe freely again.

God began a work in me that continues to this day, and He will do the same for you too, my friend. All we have to do is ask.

Faith in God begins with recognising our earthbound state, our need of solace, forgiveness and grace. It continues with seeing God’s light shining bright in the darkest of circumstances, as a beacon of Hope when life feels hopeless.

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4 NIV

We learn to speak openly to God and grow accustomed to His voice. It’s a dialogue of prayer varying from silence, a breath, cry or a spiel of words. And this is what He whispered to me a while back when I had forgotten to seek His face on a regular basis….

“You sit with a deep well of sadness within. It causes you to seek diversion and distraction with avoidance tactics. Yet your soul cries cannot be ignored. Try instead to sit with these feelings in silence. Offer them to Me. Because sadness is a gift to turn your soul in My direction, and silence, likewise, steers you away from worldly noise to being better able to hear My voice.

Let Me comfort you with the present of My presence. Allow Me to penetrate the barriers and barricades you attempt to hide behind. Grant Me access to your distress. I already have full awareness and comprehension of your situation.

I want to offer you the gift of complete understanding and insight into why you feel as you do. As you spend time with Me I will unveil the heart of mystery. Linger longer in my presence and you will also receive the gift of rest and peace. Resolution may yet be a long way off but don’t let that dishearten you. Rest in My provision and timing.

Listen now to what sadness has to say to you. Rather than pulling away or being pulled into a quagmire, in the listening and looking with spiritual intent you will be able to discern the cause and how it can be dealt with.

Then let Me breathe solace into your soul. Let Me bind up those wounds and lead you toward becoming healed and whole. Trust Me to deal ever so gently with your sensitive soul.

In time you will be strengthened and enabled to rise above the pain you are in. And once you have been through the fire and out the other side, use the knowledge you have gained to walk beside and encourage others.”

“May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.” – Psalm 119:76

  1. Dear Joy,
What precious words here today! I am so moved by this: “Resolution may yet be a long way off but don’t let that dishearten you. Rest in My provision and timing.” So often I find myself chafing against God’s timing, hearing myself sound almost cynical as I quote, “oh I know His timing is always best” when actually I am meaning that I wish He would function on MY timetable! But what a beautiful thought, to know that in surrendering to His way, I can find REST in His timing! Thank you for your encouragement this morning! Love and Hugs and Blessings to you my dear friend!

    1. Dear Bettie, I couldn’t help but smile at the way you described how your spoken reassurance doesn’t always match with your inner feelings! 🙂 That’s true for me too. We make these bold declarations of faith but our hearts don’t always align with what our mouths are saying. Yet, as you have pointed out, we can indeed find blissful REST if we learn to surrender the outcomes and timing to God. I’m still an impatient work in progress here too.. though I am grateful to have discovered this almost-finished post in draft, requiring only minimal tweaks to be sent out today. And I am also very happy to have encouraged you in doing so, my friend. Blessings, love and hugs to you! xo <3

  2. It’s so comforting to envision the picture of our Beacon of Hope leading us on to Himself, isn’t it? Sadness being a gift to draw us to Himself. And His promise that even though our troubles aren’t resolved, He is faithful in His timing and provision. Thank you, dear Joy, for encouraging my heart today. Love and hugs to you!

    1. Trudy, I love how you have expressed it as “our Beacon of Hope”, because it’s exactly who Jesus is to us, lost in darkness as we are. Sadness is something I sit with a lot during winter, largely as a result of SAD, shorter daylight hours and the effects of post-viral fatigue. But our fickle feelings are not a true indicator of our state before God. They deceive us so much. Yet God is ever faithful and trustworthy, especially in our times of struggle. I’m so glad you were encouraged here, my friend! You always encourage me by being here. Love and hugs! xo 💜

  3. It’s so comforting to know that He already has “full awareness and comprehension of [our] situation.” isn’t it, sweet Joy? Thank you for these spirit-filled assurances today, my friend! Blessings on your week!

    1. Yes, June, it is. Though I often forget those words and get overly concerned about the circumstances I am in. However, God is so patient and gracious to bring these things to our remembrance time and again! May you have a blessed weekend ahead, dear friend! xo 💜

  4. Such comforting words, Joy. So thankful that He walks with us, and as you said, the more we walk with Him, the more He unveils His “heart of mystery.” (Love that phrase…”heart of mystery.” Such a mysterious God, He is. I love your insight on how more and more of that mystery is unveiled with the more time we spend with Him.) — Beautifully written, Joy. Thank you for sharing. ((Hug))

    1. Brenda, I am truly thankful you found comfort in these words! The heart of mystery may be unknowable to us but as we continue to pursue a close relationship with God, and spend time resting in His presence, He reveals deep things to us we may not have noticed before. Thank you so much for reading and leaving a lovely comment! My apologies for being slow to get back to you. Blessings and hugs! <3

Your words matter. I'd love to hear from you.
