vibrancy: an invitation to rest and a deeper soul life

Summer’s onset is a call to vibrancy, an invitation to come alive on the inside, to hear heaven’s heartbeat thrumming in our souls and witness the glory of God’s creation in the world around.

We’re invited to participate, to become filled with holy awe and to develop a larger perspective, deeper awareness and appreciation of all living things. Maybe then the concerns of this world will have less of a hold on us.

“And why do you worry about clothes? Notice how the lilies in the field grow. They don’t wear themselves out with work, and they don’t spin cloth. But I say to you that even Solomon in all of his splendor wasn’t dressed like one of these. If God dresses grass in the field so beautifully, even though it’s alive today and tomorrow it’s thrown into the furnace, won’t God do much more for you, you people of weak faith?” – Mathew 6:28-30 CEB

Vibrancy

Sleeper, awaken, for God’s gaze summons us to life, to vibrancy
and verdant greening of our soul’s soil as it abides in Christ like
a delicate tendril, somehow rooting itself in rock, ready to thrive

despite how fiercely cold winds blow and summer’s heat causes
it to droop and dissipate, while it waits for thirst to be quenched
and strength to rise from the sap still present in curled up leaves

that crisp and brown at the edges, barely alive, indisposed, yet
still have some semblance of vitality from stored up food and rain
and retain a clear memory of what enlivens and feeds them most

while chlorophyll rushes through the veins, flows freely, to make
them oxygenate, with tender, fresh leaves growing greenly, as the
plants of life and love bloom like perfumed flowers in our souls

as God intends them to, full and lush, sending out a signal to let
others know we have spent time in his presence and feasted long
at his table, because it’s our acts of love alone that will outlive us

You and I might feel more like a flagging, fading freesia sitting in shade than a vibrant, flaming fuchsia lit up by sun’s rays, but rooted by faith in Christ, we can shine brightly for Him and bloom where we are planted.

“The Spirit is the one who gives life! Human strength can do nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are from that life-giving Spirit.” John 6:63CEV

I’m currently more like a faded violet than anything else. At least that’s how my body feels! 😏 As summer breaks through on these shores, I am in need of a break from busyness, a time, or season perhaps, of rest and deeper soul abiding in Christ. Maybe you can relate?

Therefore, I will be resting my words here for a few weeks, while seeking to regain inner vitality and vibrancy and (hopefully) a degree of physical strength as well. God is calling me to relax my grip on writing things and also calling me to expand my vision in other ways.

I’m hoping to recover from the heavily fatigued state I am in, enjoy spending time with loved ones and explore new avenues of creativity. Experience teaches me there is always something to be gained from letting go our hold on daily activities and waiting patiently on God.

  1. Dear Joy,
I always love your posts. Your poem is beautiful, and I esp. love these lines:

“plants of life and love bloom like perfumed flowers in our souls

as God intends them to, full and lush, sending out a signal to let
others know we have spent time in his presence and feasted long
at his table, because it’s our acts of love alone that will outlive us”

I pray you will find rest and peace and refreshment as you take a step back. Blessings, love and hugs to you my dear sister/poet/friend! xoxo

    1. Dear Gayl, thank you so much for your lovely encouragement! It warms my heart to hear you are blessed by the words I share. I also greatly appreciate your prayers. It can be a bit daunting to take a break but they can be times of deep soul rest and refreshment, as we are less distracted than before, more available to our family and real life friends, and can listen better to the Lord. That’s my hope and prayer. Blessings, love and hugs returned to you my soul sister friend! xoxo 💜

  2. I pray you will have a relaxing break and be renewed and invigorated in body, mind, and soul, Joy. I, too, am taking a break again this summer to renew, replenish, and refocus. I’m announcing it in tomorrow’s post. Love and hugs to you! 🌼 ❤️ 🌈

    1. Oh that sounds good! May it be so for both of us. It’s always helpful to heed God’s voice calling us to rest in Him, and we benefit tremendously when we are obedient. I could also do with being renewed and replenished. A fresh focus is welcome too. I hope to catch up on your post soon but am rather burdened at the moment because of the necessary preparations we have to make to go away in a few days time. But I will try and read it before you return to blogging! Love and hugs to you too, dear Trudy! xo 😊💜

  3. Dear Joy,
I am praying for you, that the Lord will give you such a sweet break and time away. I was so struck with your thoughts today,

“Sleeper, awaken, for God’s gaze summons us to life, to vibrancy
and verdant greening of our soul’s soil as it abides in Christ like
a delicate tendril, somehow rooting itself in rock, ready to thrive”

We so often feel the need to rest, just to lie down and recover (at least that is what I feel!) But God is actually awakening us, birthing new life, through those very times of rest. How precious of the Lord! Thank you for sharing words that again have stirred me so deeply, dear friend! I will miss you here, but I am so glad that the Lord is calling you to a time of rest. Blessings, love and hugs to you! xoxo

    1. Dear Bettie, I agree that it’s a precious gift of grace to be awakened while we rest or take a break from our usual activities. Maybe it’s because we’re in a more receptive frame of mind than when frazzled by busyness? I’m glad these words have stirred you, my friend! I will miss engaging with you here, though we can still communicate and pray for one another’s needs. May you be given wisdom in knowing just how much or how little God is asking you to do as your beloved husband recovers his strength and you begin to blog again. Blessings, love and hugs to you too! xoxo 💜

  4. Thank you for all your beautiful gifts, Dear Joy. Due to my own energy issues, I can’t always keep up with all the reading and commenting I would like to, but I want to take this moment to tell you how much I appreciate the beauty and goodness you offer. My prayers for you continue; heartfelt and daily. <3

    1. Dear Cheryl Anne, I am in awe of your beautiful gifts of poetic, prayerful expression that spring forth from careful listening to God and a captivated heart. So it means a lot for you to be thankful for how God works in me too. Please don’t be concerned about how much or how little you are able to do in terms of reading and commenting. I quite understand how demanding it can be. Now you will have a break from me at least as I rest my words on both my blogs! 😏 Your prayers are gratefully received and coveted, sweet friend. They are tremendously appreciated and are making a hugs difference. Thank you! Sending blessings, love and prayers to you. 💜❤

Your words matter. I'd love to hear from you.
